Prof Indar Jit Dewan was born in 1912. He completed his MBBS from King Edward Medical College, Lahore in 1935. He got married in 1937 at Rawalpindi with Smt. Savitri Devi.

After partition Hindu and Sikh staff from the King Edward Medical College, Lahore migrated to medical college, Amritsar and replaced the Muslim staff who migrated to Lahore. Prof Dewan also joined the Medical College, Amritsar along with other senior faculty members.

In order to strengthen the teaching staff of medical colleges in India in 1948, the Govt. of India decided to select some teachers of Indian origin from various medical colleges of the country for training abroad. Prof Dewan went to London and had an honour of working with Prof. J.D. Boyd at London Hospital Medical School in 1949. On his return to Amritsar in September 1951, he was appointed Professor of Anatomy and later Head of the Rohtak Medical College as its first Principal from 1962-1970. He was the Editor of the Journal of Anatomical Society of India from 1957-60 and had hosted the 9th Annual Conference of the Anatomical Society at Amritsar in 1959.

Prof Dewan was appointed as Professor in PGI in 1970 after his retirement from Haryana. He continued as whole time Emeritus Professor of the Department of Anaotmy and Forensic Medicine for 27 years till May 1999 when he resigned from headship.

For recognition of his research work, he received many academic awards, some of them are:

  1. Elected as fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, 1961
  2. B.C. Roy National Award 1976
  3. Ramji Dass Oration 1970
  4. Sadiqui Memorial Oration Lucknow 1987
  5. Shamer Singh Oration Calcutta 1996
  6. Khonalkar Research Award of National Academy of Medical Sciences 1996.

He was also elected as a fellow of INSA in 2001 at the age of 90 years. This was a great honour. He was the 2nd anatomists in India to be elected as a fellow since the academy started in 1935.
