Proceedings of 20th Annual Conference of IAPSM, Orissa State Branch

The XXth Annual Conference of IAPSM, Orissa State Branch, was organized by the department of Social and Preventive Medicine, MKCG Medical College, Berhampur on 12th and 13th January 2002.

A total of 67 delegates from all the three Medical Colleges of the state of Orissa as well as doctors from peripheral cadre participated in the conference.

The inaugural function of the conference was held at the auditorium of MKCG Medical College, Berhampur on 12th January 2002 at 10.00 AM. On this occasion, Prof. Sasi B. Misra Vice-Chancellor of Berhampur University was the Chief Guest. Dr. A. Abraham Joseph, Prof. & Head of Department of Community Health, C.M.C., Vellore and Dr. M.D. Gupte, Director, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai were the Guests of Honour on the said occasion. Other Guest of Honour, Dr. R.C.C. Patnaik, MD (SPM), MLA, Berhampur Assembly Constituency released the 1st issue of "Journal of Preventive and Social Medicine" an official publication of IAPSM, Orissa State Branch at the inaugural function.

There were exclusive sessions on "Prevention of low birth weight - a challenge to public health specialists" and "Disease surveillance system" after a key note address by Dr. A. Abraham Joseph on "The role of SPM department in community oriented Medical Education" on 12th January, 2002. Two sessions were very lively for delegates and participants as Dr. A. Abraham Joseph and Dr. M.D. Gupte spoke on the topics from various angles. Dr. M.M. Pradhan, Surveillance Medical Officer, Orissa, Dr. Reuben Samuel, Health Co-ordinator, WHO, Orissa, Dr. A.V. Ramani Project Officer (Health). Unicef Orissa had participated in the discussions on the above topics.

On 13.01.2002, there was a sensitization workshop on "Facts about Leprosy" sponsored by DANLEP, Orissa for the delegates and local private practitioners. Dr. Trinath Prasad Patro, State Project Co-ordinator, Ms. Santa Raye, Assistant State Project Co-ordinator, DANLEP and Dr. P.K.B. Patnaik, Asst. State Leprosy Officer participated in the workshop.

A scientific paper presentation session of about 3 hours was held simultaneously from 9.30 AM to 12.30 p.m. and 18 papers were presented by faculty members and P.G. Students from three Medical Colleges of the State.

Besides, there were sessions on Malaria, HIV/AIDS and Role of Voluntary Health Association in upliftment of community health. Dr. B.P. Patnaik, Prof. J.P. Mitra, Mr. Ajoya Tripathy (OVHA) participated in the sessions along with our faculty members.

General body meeting was held before lunch on 2nd day and it was unanimously decided that the present executive will continue for the next term. Audited accounts were passed. All the members were unanimous to sustain the journal of the organization.

Prof. (Mrs.) P. Singh opted to organize the next conference at V.S.S. Medical College, Burla during Jan 2003.

A session on RCH programme was also held in the afternoon. The valedictory function was held at 5.00 p.m. on 13.1.2002.
