American Hospital Association Website

Author(s): Rajiv Kumar Jain*

Vol. 13, No. 2 (2001-07 - 2001-12)

The American Hospital Association (AHA) is the National Organization of USA that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. AHA is the largest, most active and forceful Hospital Association in any country in the World. Close to 5000 hospitals, health care systems, networks, other providers of care and 37,000 individual members come together to form the AHA. Founded in 1898, the AHA provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on health care issues and trends through its representation and advocacy activities. AHA ensures that member's perspectives and needs are heard and addressed in national health policy development, legislative and regulatory debates, and judicial matters.

The Website of the American Hospital Association (AHA), is one of the most actively evolving, interactive, newsworthy and useful sites to be visited by any practicing Hospital Administrator. Most of the areas in the site are available free to all, except for some areas reserved only for 'Members Only Access'. The vision of the American Hospital Association is of 'a society of healthy communities where all individuals reach their highest potential for health'. To realize this vision AHA has formulated its Mission as 'To advance the health of individuals and communities. AHA leads, represents and serves health care provider organizations that are accountable to the community and committed to health improvement.' It is in this context that the website is to be looked at and assessed. Really, the creators have worked hard to develop the website as an effective tool to realize the Mission and the Vision.

The homepage has areas devoted to 'About the AHA,' 'Advocacy Resources' 'Links', 'Member Relations' 'Press Room' 'Resource Center' at the top and 'Latest News', 'Key Issues at the AHA' 'Advocacy and Representation', 'AHA Certification Center', 'AHA Policy 'Forum', 'Awards and Events' 'Become a Member', 'Coalition to Protect America's Health Care' 'Financial Solutions', 'Grassroots Advocate Network', 'Health Forum' 'Institute for Diversity in Health Management', 'JCAHO', 'Nurse Executives', 'Publications' 'Personal Membership Groups' 'Research and Education' 'HRET, State/Regional and Metropolitan Associations', 'Studies and Statistics'. The Website's home structure is quite exhaustive and comprehensive.

Once you start visiting one area, one is compelled to go deeper and deeper in other areas as one discovers more and more interesting and useful information being available. I have found the site being updated very regularly with new information being added every day.

I found the 'Health Forum', 'Financial Solutions', 'Awards and Events' and 'Research and Education' areas as the most useful in our context in India. AHA-Financial Solutions Inc. (AHA-FSI) is a subsidiary of American Hospital Association that designs and develops insurance and financial products for health care organizations. This is the endorsement arm for risk management and employee benefit products, expanded into areas of finance and technology.

Another useful feature is a Search Engine available for searching within the Web Site for any specific information in the field of Health Administration and Hospital Administration. The area on studies and statistics has extensive data available relating to various areas - geographical as well as functional in the field of Hospital Administration.

'Key Issues' gives authentic comprehensive over view of currently faced issues and problems e.g., 'Disaster Readiness' 'Health Care Workforce', 'Quality and Patient Safety' 'Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act' (HIPPAA).

One can become a member online to take advantage of complete membership facilities. One can also renew the membership online. All the publications of AHA can also be ordered by making payments online.

Details of all the important conferences, workshops, seminars in various areas of health administration and hospital administration are also available. The Website's area on 'Frequently Asked Question (FAQ)' is also very useful to new visitors.

Surely this site is a must-visit by all health and hospital administrators.
