Celebration of World Blood Donor Day on 14 th June, 2004

The World Blod Donor Day‘ was celebrated for the first time all over the world on the 14th June in memory of Karl Landsteiner- the father of Transfusion Medicine International Federation of Blood Donor Organisation, Denmark proposed the commemoration to be approved by the WHO (blood safety team) Geneva. At a joint meeting between NACO and WHO organized by the Kerala State AIDS Control Organisation from the 3rd-5th February 2004, it was decided to celebrate thisday in India.

(A) - ISBTI Delhi Chapter in collaboration with NACO & SBTC organised a symposium on‘‘Quality in Blood donation``. The symposiumwas inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr.PrasadaRao - Union Health Secreary Government ofIndia & Dr. S.P. Agarwal Director General HealthServices Government of India was the guest of honour.

A poster on the promotion of voluntary blood donation prepared by the ISBTI was released by the Secretary Health Government of India on this occasion. Press meeting was also held on this occasion, which was attended, by the President, Deputy President and Secretary General ISBTI. Dr. Markroo Secretary General ISBTI gave the over view of ISBTI activities and blood transfusion services of India. Dr. Makroo informed the media that ISBTI has launched Rakta Kranti (Red Revolution) by organising Nation wide seminars symposiums, rallies. Slogans / Messages on promotion of voluntary blood donations on inflated balloons were depicted at various prominent places on thisoccasion.

(B) - First World Blood Donor Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm on 14 th June, 2004 by th Department of Transfusion Medicine PGI, Chandigarh. To mark this occasion, a symbolic function was organised by the department in which a ‘‘commemorative postage stamp cover`` was released by Mr. L.K. Suri, Chief Postmaster General of Punjab and UT Chandigarh circle. Seven of the ten Centurion blood donors and two women blood donors with more than 50 donations, were honoured by Prof. K.K. Talwar, Director PGI, Chandigarh. Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) Sector 32 and General Hospital Sector 16, in the city also actively participated in the event.

(C) - Regular voluntary blood donors of Trivandrum were felicitated at a function organized by the All Kerala Blood Donor Society (KEBS), A voluntary organization working for the promotion of voluntary blood donation, in association with SCTIMST. Red Cross organized a seminar at the IMA hall, Trivandrum as part of the celebration

(D) - A state level function was organized to celebrate the day by State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), Orissa in collaboration with Indian Red Cross Society, Orissa State branch and Orissa Voluntary Blood Donors and Motivators Association at Orissa Disaster Mitigation Preparedness (ODMP) conference hall, Bhubaneswar. A voluntary blood donation camp was organized and SBTC, Orissafelicitate 28 prominent donors.

(E) - Prathama Blood Centre, Ahmedabad has celebrated this event. There was a felicitation function along with inhouse blood donation camp. More than 150 voluntary blood donors have donated blood. Blind man‘s association-Ahmedabad have also participated by donating blood on this occasion.
