Academic Activities and training programs of COEH - (2002-2003)

Achievements

  • COEH is attempting for a collaboration with World Health Organisation (WHO) for Intercountry Consultation on Regional Strategies for Strengthening Occupational Health in SEAR countries. A high level delegation from Geneva had visited the centre and inspected the facility available.
  • The Centre prepared Action Plans on Clinical Laboratories in India for World Bank. The action plans were prepared on Chemical Safety and Biomedical Waste Management.
  • An Environmental Management Plan Framework for Laboratories in India was constructed by the Centre. Environmental issues related to laboratories, current work practices, mitigation measures and contingency plans were addressed in the framework.

Workshop and Training Program Conducted

1. Workshop on Hearing Conservation in Industry on 6 th –7 th Feb. 2004: COEH organized a workshop on 6 th –7 th Feb. 2004 in collaboration with Deptt. of ENT Maulana Azad Medical College on Hearing Conservation in Industry. The main faculty members were Prof. S.K. Kacker, (Former Director AIIMS), Dr. A.K. Agarwal, (Prof., HOD, ENT Deptt., Lok Nayak Hospital), Dr. T.K. Joshi, Project Director, COEH, Dr. Achal Gulati, (Prof. ENT.), Dr. Shelly Khanna Chadha (Ass. Prof. ENT), Dr. M. P. George (DPCC), Mr. V.K. Sharma, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories, Dr. S. Ramji, Prof. of Paediatrics, MAMC, Dr. V. K. Tuli (Indian Airlines), Mr. Qamar Ahmed (Jt. Commissioner Police, Traffic), Delhi, Mr. Sharan Sethi (Advocate), Dr. S. C. Swain (Bhilai Steel Plant).

2. Workshop on Occupational Safety and Health on 16 th – 17 th January 2004: Centre for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) organized a workshop on 16 th – 17 th Jan. 2004 in collaboration with Hebrew University School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and SAOEH. Dr. Beni Malenky (Hebrew University, Israel), Dr. Elihu Richter (Prof., Hebrew University, Israel), Dr. T.K. Joshi, Project Director, COEH were the faculty. About 30 Participants from industry attended the workshop.

3. Workshop on Fogarty International Research and Training Programme on Environmental and Occupational Epidemiology 1 st – 12 th December, 2003: The two-week intensive training workshop on Environmental Epidemiology was conducted by Centre for Occupational & Environmental Health (COEH), Lok Nayak Hospital at MAMC, Delhi. Dr. Asheena Khalakdina (Epidemiologist, Berkeley), Prof. Rajesh Kumar (PGI Chandigarh), Dr. Ondine von Ehrenstein (Berkeley), Dr. Sumi Mehta (WHO), Dr. Harry Caussy (WHO), Dr. Arin Basu (Kolkata), Dr. T. K. Joshi, COEH, New Delhi were the faculty. Twenty-four participants from all over India and a neighbouring country (Nepal) attended the workshop.

4. Dr. Gerry Eijkemans, a specialist staff member from the Occupational Health Programme of WHO Headquarters, Geneva and Dr. Harry Caussey of WHO-SEARO visited the Centre on 1 st May, 2003. The visit was intended to explore the Centre\'s involvement as a collaborating Centre.

5. Workshop on “Current Strategies on Prevention of Deafness in India” on 1-2 April 2003. Organized by Dept. of ENT, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi. The COEH was a co-sponsor of the workshop, which was attended by leading ENT specialists from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal and other Indian cities.

6. Workshop on Occupational, Health & Safety Management System 3 rd – 4 th March 2003. : The centre organized a two day workshop on Occupation safety and health management system (OSH – MS) focusing on importance of good management practices to ensure a high standard of occupational health safety in the workplace. The faculty included Dr. Krishna Gopal Rampal, Professor of Occupational Health, National University of Malaysia, Mr. V.K. Sharma, Dy. Chief Inspector of Factories, Labour Deptt., Govt. of NCT Delhi and Dr. T.K. Joshi, Project Director, COEH. Participants included representatives of industry, factory inspectors, and NGO\'S.

7. Workshop on Occupational, Health & Safety 27 th – 28 th Feb. 2003: COEH organized a two-day workshop on General Occupational Health & Safety & Industrial Hygiene. Dr. Krishna Gopal Rampal, Professor of Occupational Health, National University of Malaysia, Dr. Arindam Basu, MD, MPH (USA), Mr. V.K. Sharma, Dy. Chief Inspector of Factories, Labour Deptt., Govt. of NCT Delhi and Dr. T.K. Joshi, Project Director, COEH were the faculty.

  • Evaluation of chemicals in selected industries of Delhi in collaboration with Deptt. of Labour, Govt. of NCT of Delhi.
  • Elemental Mercury Exposure Among Health Care Workers
  • Analysis of the news clippings relating to safety, health and environmental issue.
