Workshop On ‘Hearing Conservation In Industry\'

A workshop on ‘Hearing Conservation in Industry\' was held on the 6 th & 7 th of February 2004. The workshop was conducted by the ‘Centre for Occupational & environmental health\' in association with the Deptt. of ENT, Maulana Azad Medical College & Lok Nayak Hospital. This was in collaboration with the Factories Inspectorate, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee & Central Pollution Control Board.

There were approximately 40 delegates from Industry including Government and corporate sectors. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr. S.K. Kacker, ex-Director of AIIMS. The first day was devoted to the ill-effects of Noise. Pre-lunch session had various eminent speakers including

  • Dr. A.K.Agarwal,
  • Dr. T.K. Joshi,
  • Dr. S.D. Sharma
  • Dr. Shelly K. Chadha.
  • Dr. S.C. Swain

They elaborated on the various harmful effects of Noise, both on the human body as well as psyche. In the afternoon, there was a Panel discussion on ‘Noise- problem areas\'. This was moderated by Dr. Achal Gulati. Panelists were eminent persons including

  • Dr. S.K. Kacker, ENT surgeon
  • Dr. A.K. Agarwal, ENT surgeon
  • Dr. T.K. Joshi, Ocupational Health expert.
  • Dr. S. Ramji, Paediatrician
  • Mr. Mathura Prasad, NTPC
  • Mr. Qamar Ahmed, DCP, Traffic
  • Dr. V.K. Tuli, Indian Airlines

They dwelt upon the problems related to noise in children, in industry, traffic related noise, legislation related to noise as well as its control.

Second day session was devoted to the Hearing Conservation Programme, as it should be implemented in Industry. Dr. T.K. Joshi dealt with the concept of Hearing Conservation Programme. Each component of this programme was then dealt with in detail. This included:

  • Measurement of Noise by Dr. George, DPCC.
  • Control of Noise through architectural measures by Manjari Kapoor, Architect.
  • Use of protective devices by Uttpal B. Bhuva, Industrial Hygienist, COEH.
  • Legislation regarding Noise Pollution by Mr. V.K. Sharma, Deputy Chief Inspector of Factories.
  • Surveillance for Hearing loss by Dr. J.C. Passey, Prof. Of ENT, MAMC.

The morning session also included an interactive session with patients who had suffered Occupational noise trauma and were suffering from Noise Induced Hearing Loss. They put forward their experiences to the audience in a lively discussion.

The final session was a practical demonstration of the surveillance techniques for Hearing loss including Audiometry and other specialized tests.
