Dear Reader,

Board of ICHA decided in the meeting on 21st March 09 to prioritize patient safety. Board adopted the WAPS initiatives for rapid implementation in India with the support from global and Indian partners.

ICHA Patient Safety Initiative with WHOWAPS, NPSA and other partners

Patient centered healthcare is the ICHA model of excellence. ICHA fraternity believes, safety of patient is the hallmark of excellent care and our raison d’ etre.

The total congruence of tenets of ICHA & WHOWAPS (World Alliance on Patient Safety) has brought together prominent global partners from UK, USA and Europe e.g. NPSA and Manchester NHS Trust. More confirmations shall be progressively updated.

Our ICHA has embarked on Patient Safety implementation through the WAPS Action Areas and Global Patient Safety Challenges (GPSC I, II & III) as below:

1. Commonwealth Fellowship Programme: Overwhelming response from the fraternity through dissemination, applications and nominations was the first step of this pilot project. Many more such opportunities will be available continually.

2. Multi – location events: One day events are being planned all over the country. Positive responses have been received from several locations. The first event is at KEM Hospital Auditorium, Parel, Mumbai on April 19th 09. More dates and locations shall be communicated as finalized. A core committee is working full steam. During these events we shall:

  • “Clean Care is Safer Care”: The first GPSC challenge is being launched by WHO on May 5, 09. Details on WHO web site http://www.who.int/gpsc/5may/en/index.html. ICHA shall coordinate to collect, collate and compute the data to present Status report at the November Convention. As also GPSC II “Safe Surgery Saves Lives”.
  • Sensitize participants to all WAPS Action Areas and participation as appropriate.
  • Consultation and Interaction for participation in the above and Grand Convention in November 09. To identify Patient Safety Champions and Action Area teams.

3. Develop partnerships with Healthcare Systems.

4. Consolidation and Pre-convention event at Delhi in September.

5. ICHA Convention on Patient Safety: 27 – 29 November 09 at New Delhi. H. E. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam has kindly consented to be the Chief Guest and bestowed the status of a mega event. We have also invited Sir Liam Donaldson Chair WAPS. Many other dignitaries and Partners shall collaborate.

The convention proposes detailed deliberations on various aspects of Patient Safety and focus on all WAPS Action Areas. The focus shall be on India centric priorities and contributions. The outcome aimed is that ICHA fraternity with Global partners:
