BGI has developed a non-invasive prenatal test that can more accurately detect trisomy 21 in a fetus (http://birth.bgi-health.com/bhc/). Unlike traditional methods that require harvesting placental tissue cells or entering the uterus to sample the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby, NIFTY relies on sequencing the fetal DNA in the maternal blood. Studies have shown that about 5 to 10% of cell free DNA in a pregnant woman are from the fetus, so an elevated proportion on chromosome 21 would indicate Down syndrome.
