Orthopaedic Case   Posted By Parijat Banerjee    Date : 19-Jan-06   04:34 AM     Reply

My father, Mr. P.K. Banerjee had met with a car accident on 1st April, 2004. The accident took place on the Durgapur express highway, while he was driving his Maruti Esteem car, on the way back after attending a social function. It was a front end collision with a dumper truck.

After this calamity he was immediately brought over to a hospital in Kolkata (Divine Nursing Home) where Dr. Anjan Pan attended him. After the initial dressing he was later shifted to the Bellviewe Nursing Home in Kolkata, where he was operated on 9th April 2004. The main contention was that the femur bone had broken to nearly 3 pieces for the right leg. The left one was unharmed. During the course of the operation a metal plate was fitted with screws to hold the structure.

However, near October 2004, the metal plate seemed to have broken due to which the leg was getting deformed. On intimation, a second operation was performed by Dr. Anjan Pan, this time in Divine Nursing home and the plate was removed. A titanium plate was inserted this time to hold the structure. However, after this second operation, both of which were tremendously painful for my dad, the operated leg i.e. the right one seemed to be shorter in length. Even some bone was removed from his hip this time for a grafting process that was undertaken.

Today, after nearly 1&1/2 years after the accident he is still unable to walk perfectly. His right leg seems to get no strength though he uses the crutch to walk around. The right knee seems locked and he is unable to bend it completely. A constant feeling of a burning sensation continues to bother his foot at all times. The length has also reduced due to which we need to alter all his shoes.
