About the Steven Johnson patient from Pakistan:

I did not see a report on the visual status of the 2 eyes. It seems to be that the patient is able to carry out activities of daily living with her right eye.If that is so, no surgery is contemplated. She may use Restasis (Allergan Inc) i.e. topical 0.05% cyclosporin eye drops twice a day in addition to her topical lubricants, in both eyes (cost approx.$100 for a month's supply).

If however, both eyes have only perception of light, with accurate projection, she needs to have bscan ultrasonography to confirm retina is attached; if possible VEP and ERG to confirm retinal function. If all these are normal, she may benefit from pintucci keratoprosthesis surgery in one eye. I have done almost 40 such cases over 7 years, and would be happy to share my results with the patient's doctor.
