Has Six Sigma a Role in Healthcare   Posted By Dr. Praneet Kumar    Date : 28-Jul-07   03:06 AM     Reply

I have been involved with the subject "Quality" formally for over last two years as one of my key responsbilities. However, the focus on quality has been the driver through out my professional career; be it as a clinician or a manager. I have been hearing a lot about Six Sigma as one of the tools for Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement Programmes that impact the efficiencies and outcomes. Recently, the murmurs in Health Sector have also been heard about the usage of Six Sigma.

I am not very sure that Six Sigma can be applied blindly, especially in the clinical setting, in health sector.Call it my ignorance, but I would like to know if someone has used Six Sigma in Healthcare setting especially in the clinical setting - i.e. treatment of patient and what has been the experience and learning? I would like to clear the cow web from my mind about the applicability of this technique. Could someone enlighten me on the subject. Let me make it very clear that applicaption to improve waiting times in OPDs or facility scheduling are not the areas that I think require Six Sigma. These are the very basics for operations. It is the applicability to clinical setting that makes the thought worth considering. Ultimate ainm is patient welfare through good outcomes.
